Save the Date — May 4, 2012

That’s the theatrical release of The Avengers. The movies The Incredible Hulk, Iron Man 1 & 2, Thor, and Captain America are all leading up to The Avengers, a team up of superheroes.

So far, at least according to the Avengers IMDB page, the superheroes will include Captain America (Chris Evans), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.), and Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) / Hulk (CG) from the original comic books stable of “Earth’s Mightiest Hero”.

As of yet, I don’t see the Ant-Man and Wasp, though each superhero is rumored to have his and her standalone movie, too.

Joining the Avengers are familiar characters and superheroes we’ve seen in previous standalone movies, namely Black Widow (Scarlett Johansen), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg).

Pepper Potts played by Gwyneth Paltrow is rumored to be part of the cast which I fully support because she has great chemistry with Agent Coulson and could add some lightness to the movie.

The big baddie seems to be Loki (Tom Hiddleston) from Thor movie who will probably try to assert his mastery over the Cosmic Cube, a powerful artifact that we saw after the credits.

I’m lukewarm to Loki as the big baddie. Face it, the character was kinda bland throughout the movie. Maybe because I’m comparing him next to the other big baddie we’ve seen so far, Magneto played by Michael Fassbender. Magneto was every bit a badass as we could ever expect for an epic bad guy.

I suppose the only other choices for The Avengers big baddie would be The Leader from Incredible Hulk and Red Skeleton from Captain America, who we haven’t seen yet as of this writing. Those two are not nearly as powerful as Loki (or, one could wish, Magneto). Though I’m assuming that Loki will trick other super villains to help him.

In any case, Joss Whedon (Buffy, Angel, Firefly) has a lot of work to do and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. This movie will also make it worth collecting Avengers statues & figures for fans.
